Around the time the clocks go back, our inbox changes.

In summer, people write to tell us how cool their muslin blanket feels. Then autumn arrives, and a different message starts coming in, so often that my team can recognise it from the first line:

“I'm too hot under my duvet and too cold without it. What do I do?”

I've answered a lot of these emails. I've also read what people write back after they've tried our 9-layer blanket. So rather than tell you how good it is, I'd like to pass on what our customers tell us.

The in-between nights nobody warns you about

You know the ones. You get into bed, it's chilly, so you pull the winter duvet right up. Two hours later you're awake, too warm, kicking it off. By morning you're cold again, and tired before the day has even started.

The summer throw is too thin. The winter duvet is too much. And once the heating goes on, the bedroom turns stuffy and the air gets dry.

That's the moment most of the emails I mentioned are written.

Often, it isn't you. It's what you're sleeping under.

A thick duvet keeps you warm by trapping heat, and that's exactly the problem. Once you're warm enough, the heat has nowhere to go. Synthetic fill and fleece make it worse: cosy for the first ten minutes, clammy an hour later.

What you need in autumn isn't more warmth. It's warmth that breathes.

Most muslin blankets are made for summer. Ours was too: our classic 6-layer blanket is the one people love in July.

But as summer turned to autumn, another message kept arriving, this time from customers who already owned it:

“I love my muslin blanket, but it's too thin now.”

So we went back to the weave. We tested different numbers of layers until we found the point where it was properly warm but still breathed. That point was nine.

The result is 50% thicker than our classic blanket, with a soft, settled weight that wraps around you without pressing down.

The warmth comes from air held between the layers, not from dense filling. So it keeps you cosy, and when you get too warm, the extra heat has somewhere to go.

When the heating's on, what touches your skin matters more

This is the part that surprised me most when I started reading customer messages.

Autumn is when the heating goes on and the air gets drier, and many of you tell us your skin feels it. Fleece and synthetic blankets can feel lovely for five minutes, then turn clammy or scratchy.

What I usually suggest: the one who runs hot swaps to the muslin. Or simply get one each, and finally you both sleep through.

And it doesn't only live on the bed

Plenty of customers tell us theirs barely makes it back to the bedroom. It goes on the sofa for autumn evenings, folded at the foot of the bed, or over a chair in the guest room.

My favourite tip for couples: two Doubles, one each. Nobody steals the blanket, and nobody wakes up too hot.
